Top Latino Characters We Can’t Get Over
As a Hispanic living in the US, I always think about the overall representation in mainstream media that we are getting. Now, do not get me wrong, I do believe in the power of changing channels when media is no longer pleasing you.
However, in the large picture of events, we all know that mass media and Latino representation impact us as viewers. This is especially important because as second and third-generation Hispanics living in the US, we seek validation from the media and want our stories to be told.
This is the reason content streaming sites are on the rise. Most content streaming sites are not just trying to push boundaries but also trying to pave the way for channels to follow.
As a Latino-American, here are some of the most underrated Latino characters that I cannot seem to get over anytime soon.

Now, let’s explore these inspiring characters.
1- Diego Hargreeves, The Umbrella Academy
Reasons to love:
Exceptionally tough on the outside with excellent fighting skills, he has an emotional side to his character that most other characters lack. Moreover, he has a grey to his character that makes you question his overall impact on the screen.
Favorite Dialogue:
“I’m Use To Dealing With Liars, Lila, But I Like It Better When I Know What They’re Lying About.”
If you like the Umbrella Academy, there is no way you do not like Diego, especially his love for Lila. From loving her fierceness to appreciating her talent with knives and putting effort into learning a language to talk to her, Diego is a green flag that we all love.
2- Oscar Martinez, the Office
Reasons to love:
For most people, Oscar might be a guy who is just in the background, unnoticed by most, and somewhat easy to forget. However, the true “the office” fans know how funny he can be with his “actual” jokes. He is so genuine in his jokes that as a viewer you might start questioning if it was funny enough. With his straightforward dialogue delivery, very subtle humor, and very realistic approach, he makes every scene interesting for the viewers.
Favorite Dialogue:
“I know you saw me with the Senator. I think I’m in love, possibly for the first time. So yes, Senator Lipton and I are having an affair. I hope that I can count on your sensitivity, maturity, and discretion.”
As a viewer, who works in corporate, I find Oscar very relatable. Oscar has a very subtle humor, noticeably snobbish behavior, and some questionably annoying scenes. He can simply plant himself in any scene, get involved in any conversation, and start correcting people, their grammar, and even their pronunciation. Moreover, he is openly gay, which just breaks all stereotypes.
3- Rio, Good Girls
Reasons to love:
Rio is all shades of black but for Betty, he is sometimes grey and has the potential to be fully white. There are very few characters with an extreme villain arch who can make you fall head over heels and Rio defiantly takes the cake. Even in love, he is not blinded by compassion, instead, he portrays reality.
Favorite Dialogue:
“You wanna be the king, you gotta kill the king. This stuff’s medieval, darling.”
Rio is more rational than most people would give him credit for. While other characters lose their rationality in love, he is still trying to hold on to it. Moreover, this just adds to his unpredictability. Most characters with a slight soft spot would try to overdo things and push boundaries but he stays true to his morals regardless of how dark his morals are.
4- Jessica Pearson, The Suits
Reasons to love:
A smart woman who is hot and can put people in their place? What’s not to love about Jessica Pearson? As a black Latina woman, she has outdone herself in every possible way. From her impeccable fashion sense to the dialogue delivery and working as a moderator between Louise and Harvey, she is what we need our boss to be.
Favorite Dialogue:
“When you work with tigers, once in a while they are going to take a swipe at you.”
If logic were a character, Jessica would be it. When we dissect the layers of her character, we never see an emotional side. While most people would argue, that she has a soft spot for Harvey; we have seen her always prioritizing her company even when it comes at the cost of emotionally challenging Harvey. She single-handedly destroys every stereotype there is in Hollywood about Latino Characters women.
5- Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, Modern Family
Reasons to love:
A hot, witty, and exceptionally straightforward, Gloria sure knows how to make people speechless. While her exterior is all looks and slightly shallow, she has he way of proving her intelligence. While most people limit her to her shiny exterior, she has an unmatchable emotional intelligence that outshines the rest of the characters. In short, Gloria is a perfect combination of beauty with brains.
Favorite Dialogue:
“I know what I meant to mean! Do you even know how smart I am in Spanish? Of course, you don’t. For once, it would be nice to speak to someone in my language in my own home.”
Most viewers do not give Gloria enough credit just because she is pleasant to look at. There is no doubt she is pretty and most viewers think that she was typecast just like most of the Latino Characters women. However, we can all agree that even when she is struggling with words, she shines in every frame and every scene. Her words have more depth even though most people laugh at her jokes.
